Why Estes Park Colorado in Winter is the Best Mountain Escape

Rocky Mountain National Park in Estes Park, Colorado

If you’ve never experienced Estes Park, Colorado in winter, you’re missing out on a true hidden gem. But Estes Park isn’t just about escaping to tranquility—it’s alive with holiday festivities and endless winter adventures that will make you want more than just a weekend.

Kick Off the Holidays in Style
The holiday season here arrives with a sparkle, starting with the Catch the Glow Parade on Friday, November 28, 2025 at 5:30 p.m. down downtown’s Elkhorn Avenue. Thousands will gather to see handcrafted floats, marching bands, fire trucks, and yes—Santa himself lighting up the night.
Just the next day, on Saturday, November 29, 2025, the town hosts the Holiday Wine Festival at the Estes Park Events Complex. Unlimited wine tastings, seasonal eats, and Santa selfies set the perfect festive vibe.

As winter deepens, keep the fun going with the Wine & Chocolate Festival on Saturday, February 8, 2025, where you can pair fine wines with artisan chocolates in a cozy mountain setting. Then in early March, don’t miss the Whiskey Warm Up on Saturday, March 7, 2026—an outdoor event featuring tasters from Colorado distilleries, live music, and warm memories.

Explore Rocky Mountain National Park—Without the Crowds
Winter here means the national park feels like your personal playground. Trails that were bustling in summer are now quiet, snowy and serene. Take the Bear Lake Loop for a gentle introduction to snowshoeing—with dazzling winter views and frozen lakes. Or level up with the Mills Lake Trail, about 5.6 miles round‑trip, trailing through pine forests to a frozen alpine lake framed by peaks.
If cross‑country skiing is your thing, the Glacier Gorge Trail offers wide‑open meadows and snow‑draped trees for a magical glide. With fewer visitors, the natural world here feels untouched—and you’re right in the middle of it.

Discover a Quieter, More Authentic Estes Park
One of the biggest perks of visiting Estes Park in winter? It’s yours. Without the summer rush, downtown feels magically different. Grab a hot drink from a cozy coffee shop, wrap your hands around a warm mug, and watch the snow drift outside as you relax. The rhythm slows, the mountains still dominate the skyline, and the charm? It’s turned up.
