Top Spots in Estes Park to Watch Elk Calves This Season

Deer eating outside of Rocky Mountain National Park

If you’re visiting Estes Park in late spring or early summer, you’re in for one of the most heartwarming wildlife experiences in Colorado—watching elk calves take their first steps. These adorable, spotted newborns are often seen close to town, making Estes Park one of the best places to safely and easily witness this unforgettable moment in nature.

Estes Park Golf Course
One of the most reliable places to spot Estes Park elk calves is the Estes Park Golf Course. Wide-open meadows and easy access make this a favorite grazing area for cow elk and their newborns. In the early morning or evening, you’ll often see calves resting in the grass while mothers keep a watchful eye nearby. Stay at a respectful distance—elk are especially protective during calving season.

Lake Estes

The Lake Estes Trail isn’t just great for walking and biking—it’s also a prime location for spotting elk families. The grassy areas surrounding the lake provide ideal habitat for calves, and the open views make it easier to observe from afar. Bring binoculars and take your time—you never know when a calf might pop up from the grass.

Moraine Park (Near RMNP Entrance)
Just outside Rocky Mountain National Park, Moraine Park is another well-known area for elk activity during calving season. The large valley offers plenty of space for elk herds, and it’s common to see calves staying close to their mothers as they learn to navigate the terrain. Early mornings are especially active here.

Upper Beaver Meadows
For a more peaceful experience, head toward Upper Beaver Meadows. This area tends to be less crowded, giving you a better chance to observe elk in a quieter setting. The mix of open fields and forest edges creates the perfect environment for cows to hide and protect their calves.

Tips for Watching Elk Calves Safely
Calving season is a sensitive time, so always keep a safe distance—at least 75 feet—from elk. Never approach or try to get closer for photos, and avoid getting between a mother and her calf. Bring binoculars or a zoom lens so you can enjoy the experience without disturbing the animals.
