5 Unique Spots to See Rocky Mountain Fall Foliage

Longs Peak and golden aspen trees changing as viewed from Upper Beaver meadows area in September in Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado

Autumn in the Rockies is a kaleidoscope of fiery reds, golden yellows, and rich oranges—a breathtaking backdrop that calls out to leaf peepers every year. While popular spots like Bear Lake and Trail Ridge Road steal the spotlight for Rocky Mountain fall foliage, there are hidden gems in and around Rocky Mountain National Park that offer equally stunning fall foliage without the crowds. Here are five lesser-known areas where you can enjoy the vibrant colors of fall, both within RMNP and near Estes Park.

Wild Basin Area, RMNP

For a quieter experience within RMNP, head to the Wild Basin Area. This less-trafficked section of the park offers a peaceful escape into nature with incredible fall colors lining the trails. Hike to Copeland Falls or Calypso Cascades, where you’ll be surrounded by vibrant aspens and cottonwoods.

Lumpy Ridge Trail, RMNP

Just outside Estes Park, the Lumpy Ridge Trailhead offers a unique perspective on RMNP’s stunning fall colors. This area is known for its dramatic rock formations and sweeping views of the Mummy Range. The Gem Lake Trail is a moderate hike that takes you through groves of aspen trees glowing in autumn hues. Plus, the overlook at Gem Lake itself is a perfect spot to sit back and soak in the scenery.

Lily Mountain Trail, Near Estes Park

For a fall foliage hike with panoramic views, the Lily Mountain Trail is a fantastic option. Located just a short drive from Estes Park, this trail offers a moderately challenging hike through dense aspen groves. At the summit, you’ll be rewarded with sweeping views of Longs Peak and the surrounding mountains, all framed by the vibrant autumn colors.

Hermit Park Open Space, Near Estes Park

Hermit Park Open Space, located just southeast of Estes Park, is a hidden treasure for fall foliage enthusiasts. This expansive area features a variety of trails that meander through meadows, pine forests, and, of course, aspen groves. The Kruger Rock Trail is particularly popular, offering an exhilarating hike with stunning vistas of the fall colors from the summit.

Twin Sisters Peaks, RMNP

For those seeking a bit more of a challenge, the Twin Sisters Peaks trail provides an adventurous hike with some of the best fall foliage views in RMNP. The trail winds through dense aspen forests that burst into golden hues each fall, leading to a summit with 360-degree views of the surrounding peaks and valleys.
